He overcame many of them, but they left their mark on him. Finding European scientists more humanitarian than their American counterparts, he went into a self-imposed exile in Europe during the last decade of his life.
From the time he was a young adult to the end of his life, Just was an outstanding student and academician.
Born in 1883, he grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, and attended an all-black public elementary school. His father died when he was four years old, and his mother w
